Khulna is a District and headquarters of Khulna division and principal city of Khulna Division. Khulna Division area is the southernwest in Bangladesh and main rivers are Rupsa, Voirob, Shibsha, Poshur, Koppotakshi, Aarpangashia, Kunga, Marjat, Atarbaki, Vodra, Budivodra, Shelmari, Kajibachadakatia and Kakri. It was established in 1984. Khulna is the third largest city in Bangladesh after Chittagong and Dhaka. There are lived people of four religions in this district as Muslims, Hindus, Christian and Buddhist. Educational institutions are available in here. Khulna has many famous educational institutions.
Khulna District with an area of​​ approximately 4,394.46 km square is bordered by the districts of Jessore and Narail in the north, the Bay of Bengal in the southern district of Bagerhat in the east, Satkhira district in the west. Important places of Khulna Batiaghata, Dacope, Dumuria, Dighalia, Koyra, Paikgachha, Phultala, Rupsa, Terokhada.

Khulna is a Industrial City it is one of the most important industrial and commercial areas of the country. It has a Sea port named Mongla on its outskirts, 48 km south from Khulna city which is the 2nd seaport after Chittagong seaport in Bangladesh. Khulna has some heavy and medium industries like Khulna Hardboard Mills, Bangladesh Oxygen Company, Khulna Oxygen Company, Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills, Star Jute Mills, Dada Match Factory (now Dhaka Match Factory) and Khulna Ship Yard Ltd.

Khulna is also the gateway of Sundarban. There are available bus in a day. Transportation process is mainly by roads, waterways and railways. Khulna city is connected with Dhaka by air, rail, waterways and by road. It is easy to go Khulna from Dhaka.

Agriculture is main occupation in Khulna district. Other occupations are wage laborer, commerce, service, transport and others. Most of the people are farmer. There are some cultivated crops in this district. Main crops are paddy, jute, seasame, betel nut and vegetables. Main fruits are jackfruit, mango and banana. This district is a port city. Main exports are jute, potato and paddy. Paddy, wheat, potato are main exports. Main rivers are Rupsa, Voirob, Shibsha, Poshur, Koppotakshi, Aarpangashia, Kunga, Marjat, Atarbaki, Vodra, Budivodra, Shelmari, Kajibachadakatia and Kakri.

Khulna district is different kinds of games and sports such as handball, volleyball, badmilton, boxing, cricket, football etc. There are Shekh Abu Nazer cricket Stadium in Khulna. Communication system is very developed. Information and technology are also residential.

Khulna Railway Station is the main railway station in the city. Bangladesh Railway operates Express trains between Khulna-Dhaka, Khulna-Rajshahi, Khulna-Saidpur & Khulna-Benapole. And mail trains between Khulna-Parbatipur, Khulna-Chapainawabganj & Khulna-Goalanda. Jessore Airport, located 71 km north of Khulna city centre, is the only airport in the region. United Airways, Regent Airways & NovoAir have regular flights between Jessore and Dhaka. And those airlines have direct AC bus services from the airport to Khulna. Several Passenger Launches and Cargo Services are operated from BIWTA Launch Termenal, Khulna. There is a Rocket service from Khulna-Dhaka, which is not running currently.

The Sundarbans, Shatgombuj Mosque etc are the Historical Tourist Places of Khulna division. Home of Royal Bengal Tiger.  World largest mangrove forest. Sundarban is refereed as the largest tidal forest in the whole world. There are many residential hotel in Khulna.People from outside Khulna if come to visit they can use these hostel for live. There are also motel in the Khulna like porjoton motel.
