Barisal is a district of Bangladesh and also a largest division in Bangladesh. Barisal is a District in southern Bangladesh. Barisal is a City Corporation Area. Barisal is a district and division to the Southern-central in Bangladesh. It is a main headquarters in the town. It is now the headquarters of both the Barisal Division and the Barisal District. Barisal municipality was established in 1957 and was turned into a City Corporation in 2000. The Barisal city is sometimes called the "Venice of the East" or the "Venice of Bengal”.
All most of the people of Barisal district are involved to agriculture activities. The main source of economic in Barisal is mostly farming and fishing. In Barisal district published few local daily newspaper and magazine. There is available educational institution for the students in this district such as Govt. B M College, Govt. Barisal College, Govt. Hatem Ali College, Govt. Woman’s College, Best Link Future Development Foundation (Barisal campus). Sher-e-Bangla Medical College is also located there.

Just 12 km out of Barisal City is the place called Durga Sagar which is a large pond. Serving as a place for holiday trips for the city's residents, it also attracts visitors from other places. This pond is southern of Bangladesh. It is situated at Madhabpasa village of Babugonj upazilla more than 12 km away from barisal town. It is the largest pond or dighi in the country. According to a desire of Rani Durgavati, her mother Raja Jonarayan was dug this dighi in 1780. This is one of the main place of residence for the migrant birds that comes in winter. South of Barisal city there is a beach town called Kuakata. There are several hotels and motels in Kuakata. Colourful tribal people, Marma, live there . Many people came to see this wonderful place every year. Barisal district play important role in many ways to develop country economy.
The Muslims, Buddhist, Hindu and Christian religion of people live here. The tribal people Marma also live in there. Barisal was a semi-independent area in the Mughal period because of heavy fighting between them and Hindu chiefs. In course of time, it fell under Bengal Nawabs and British India, later passed to Bangladesh.
Following the partition of India in 1947, the area of Bangladesh became a province of Pakistan, initially known as East Bengal, and then, from 1955, as East Pakistan. The people of East Pakistan Province declared their independence as the nation of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, while fighting a savage war against the central Pakistani government. The separation from Pakistan took place, with extensive aid from India, on December 16, 1971 as a result of the third Indo-Pakistan War. Bangladesh was soon recognized by most other nations, although Pakistan withheld diplomatic recognition until 1974 and China did not recognize the nation until 1976. Bangladesh was admitted to the United Nations in 1974.
The central city of this region is the city of Barisal. It is one of the biggest river ports in Bangladesh. It is a city with nearly 0.38 million people and a divisional headquarter, medical college, cadet college, some pharmaceutical industries, textile industries and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority's head office. Barisal is fast growing city of the country stands on the Kirtankhola River. Country's first short landing and take off airport has been completed in Barisal and a private Airlines named Air Bengal has begun its regular air flight between Dhaka and Barisal.
